Scandinavian folklore, where spirits, ghosts and shape shifters embody different qualities of nature; thick forests, murky lakes and deep mines. They become a way of explaining odd occurrences, such as a child going missing or the milk going sour overnight. Spirits or beings such as Huldran, Maran and Gruvrån, seduce but are to be avoided, they hop back and forth through the veil between our world and theirs, evoking emotions of desire, fear, power and mystery. Traditions shaped by folklore such as Lucia and Midsummer along with the otherworldly figures in John Bauers work inform the visual research for this collection. MARA investigates folklore and storytelling as a form of feminism. Passed down generations, and translating the powerful archetypes in Scandinavian folklore into contemporary fashion.
